The Guardians is a visual representation of the social motivations that keep the National Park Service valued, relevant, and essential to the American society. The painting shows these social motivations surrounding an image of the wide open spaces provided by the National Parks. These guardian motivations include (left to right) Community, Health, Rationalism, Continuity to Future Generations, and Spirituality. Contrast is provided by the encroaching urban landscape behind the Guardians, which they are keeping at bay through their efforts to preserve the open spaces and the ability to experience them reflected in the lower panel. The constant conflict between these social values and other beliefs important to society is represented by the use of vibrant complementary colors throughout the work. Through this work I hope to provide a statement as to the need to continue to rely on these guardian beliefs to ensure the future of the National Park system.
